My Desk is Always a Mess

I used to be able to blame it on my kids.  I was working (always a home office) and would have to get up mid-task to run carpool, pick up cupcakes for the upcoming birthday party or get the goodies for the football team practice.  My kids, now in their 20’s, have been out of the house for almost a decade.

I am amazingly organized, I can multi-task with the best of them, but my piles have piles.  So what exactly does this say about me?  Had to do a little research to see what was really the matter with me.

Well, good news and bad.  I am definitely busy, and definitely creative!  OK.  Good so far.  Need both.  Since I work at home, no one really sees my desk (unless I have company and then the new desk I bought with the big drawers is my best friend!).  And messy desk people break free from tradition and can certainly think outside the box.  Love it and pride myself on the ability to think outside of the confines.

Speaking of boxes (and this why I have a messy desk because mid-task, my creative mind will stray) I know my kids’ favorite toy for their entire youth was the box the item came in.  When my youngest received a new computer, it came in a beautiful oversized box.  I asked him to take the box out for garbage pick up and went back to work.  After about 30 minutes, I called for him to take care of something and he was nowhere to be found.  Went outside, saw the box, and still nowhere.  Started calling for him, beginning to get a bit concerned.  The box, on its own, tipped over.  I called him one more time as I got closer to the box, and it tipped over again.  Hmmmm….. My genius child was thinking “inside” the box with screaming giggles coming from an amazingly entertaining cardboard toy!  But I digress.

One idea leads me to another and therefore, my disastrous desk could be a perfect symbol of my ever-moving mind.  The right side of my desk has the information for the Women’s Tennis Camp!  Can’t wait.  Underneath my computer are the coupons, the notes, the birthday cards I want to save and miscellaneous clippings that I need to get to eventually.  The top left of my desk are the items that need to find there way to another part of the house.  And to my immediate left is the pile of “stuff” that needs attention like magazines that need reviewing, camp brochures that need reading and mail that needs perusing.  Behind me are the long term projects and the charity work I’m doing….  Everything has it’s place but, even the piles are not orderly.

While I can be happy with my creativity and open mind, the upside of a clean desk is something to which I constantly aspire.  Orderliness is next to Godliness??  Well, the good news is the rest of my house is orderly. I make my bed every morning, the kitchen is cleaned (almost every meal) and I am not one for lots of stuff around the house.  Well, almost… the front entrance has three pairs of sneakers, two tennis bags and clay from the courts.  That’s because I LOVE MY FREE PLAY TIME and then I have to rush to get started back to work.

How about you?  And how does that effect the way you treat your kids and their rooms????? Can’t wait to hear…

I was just looking for this info for some time. After six hours of continuous Googleing, at last I got it in your site. I wonder what’s the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this type of informative web sites in top of the list. Usually the top websites are full of garbage.
